How to Care for Sterling Silver Jewelry: Complete Guide

Sterling silver jewelry is beautiful and durable, but it does require some care to keep its shine. Here’s everything you need to know about maintaining your 925 silver pieces.

Why Does Silver Tarnish?

Tarnishing is a natural chemical reaction between silver and sulfur compounds in the air, skin, and environment. It’s completely normal — and reversible. Tarnish does NOT mean your jewelry is fake or low quality.

Daily Care Tips

  • Put jewelry on after applying perfume, lotion, and hairspray
  • Remove before swimming (chlorine and salt water accelerate tarnishing)
  • Remove before showering or washing dishes
  • Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing to remove skin oils

How to Clean Tarnished Silver

Method 1: Silver Polishing Cloth

The gentlest method. Rub gently in one direction with a special silver cloth. Available at any jewelry store.

Method 2: Mild Soap and Water

Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water. Gently scrub with a soft toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.

Method 3: Baking Soda Paste

Mix baking soda with water to form a paste. Apply gently, rinse well. Best for heavily tarnished pieces without stones.

Storage

  • Store in an airtight bag or jewelry box
  • Keep away from humidity
  • Anti-tarnish strips in your jewelry box help prevent tarnishing
  • Store pieces separately to prevent scratching

Natural Stone Care

If your silver jewelry includes natural stones (turquoise, onyx, amethyst, etc.):

  • Avoid ultrasonic cleaners — they can damage porous stones
  • Keep turquoise away from water and chemicals
  • Onyx and garnet are more durable but still benefit from gentle care
