Ottoman and Seljuk Motifs in Silver Jewellery: A Short Field Guide

Ottoman motif 925 sterling silver ring — KAMBO

Most of the patterns on Turkish silver rings are not decoration invented last year. They are old signs, each with a specific origin. Here are the ones you will meet most often.

Tughra

The calligraphic monogram of an Ottoman sultan, used as an official signature on documents and coins. On a ring it reads as a mark of authority and heritage rather than a personal name — the tughra on a modern piece is an ornament, not a claim.

Double-headed eagle

A Seljuk emblem that predates the Ottomans, carved on the walls of Konya and on caravanserai gates. The two heads look in both directions: rule over two worlds, vigilance in every direction. It is the single most common motif on men's rings from Anatolia.

Seal of Solomon

Two interlaced triangles, known here as mühr-ü Süleyman. In Islamic tradition it is the seal on the ring of the Prophet Solomon, a sign of wisdom and command over the elements. It appears on rings, pendants and door knockers alike.

Star and crescent

Older than the Turkish flag, used in Anatolia and Byzantium before it became a national symbol. On jewellery it is usually a plain statement of identity.

Tree of life

A pattern that runs through Central Asian, Anatolian and Balkan craft: roots, trunk and branches as a single continuous line. It stands for lineage — family, continuity, generations.

Calligraphy

Short inscriptions are common on signet rings: a name, a verse, Ya Sabır, or the phrase El Galibe İllallah. The letters are cut into the metal or into the stone; on a well-made ring you can feel the depth of the cut with a fingernail.

How motifs are made

In our workshop, the pattern is either cast from a hand-carved model or engraved directly into the silver, then the recesses are oxidised so the design reads from a distance. That black shading is intentional — polishing it away flattens the motif, which is why we tell customers not to scrub a patterned ring too hard.
