How should I store silver jewelry so it doesn't tarnish?

Short answer: store silver somewhere dry and closed. A small zip bag or a lined jewellery box, one piece per compartment, away from the bathroom. Tarnish is a reaction with sulphur in the air, so the less air and moisture reach the metal, the slower it darkens. Rings you wear every day barely tarnish at all, because skin contact and gentle friction keep them bright.

What tarnish actually is

The dark film that forms on sterling silver is silver sulphide. It comes from traces of sulphur in air, in some foods, in rubber and in wool. It is only on the surface: the metal underneath is unchanged, and the film comes off with a silver cloth. Storage does not prevent it forever; it slows it down.

The simple rules

  • Dry first. Never put a ring away wet or straight after a shower. Wipe it with a soft cloth.
  • Closed, not open. A zip bag with the air pressed out, or a box with a lid, beats an open dish on the nightstand.
  • One piece per pocket. Stones and silver scratch each other when they rattle together.
  • Not in the bathroom. Humidity and hairspray speed up tarnish. A drawer in the bedroom is better.
  • Away from rubber and wool. Rubber bands, some foam inserts and wool felt release sulphur. Use cotton or the KAMBO box your ring came in.
  • Anti-tarnish strips help. A small strip or a piece of chalk in the box absorbs moisture and sulphur. Replace it every few months.

Oxidised details are not tarnish

Many of our rings have deliberately darkened recesses that make the engraving stand out. That oxidised finish is part of the design. When you polish, work on the raised surfaces with a soft cloth and leave the recesses alone; a dip cleaner would strip them.

Stones need a little more care

Softer or porous stones such as turquoise, malachite, lapis lazuli, opal and amber dislike heat, perfume and long sun exposure. Store them out of direct sunlight and put jewellery on after cosmetics, not before. Harder stones like garnet, sapphire, ruby and agate are not fussy.

Travelling

Use a small zip bag per piece and keep them in your hand luggage. A ring loose in a toiletry bag ends up scratched by zips and keys.

If it has already darkened

Most tarnish comes off in a minute with a silver polishing cloth. Stubborn film: a drop of mild dish soap in warm water, a soft toothbrush, rinse, dry fully. Avoid toothpaste and baking-soda scrubs on stones. The full routine is in how to clean a silver ring at home, and the shower, pool and sea question is answered in this guide.
