How do I choose a silver ring as a gift for a man?

Short answer: look at his hands and his habits before you look at the catalogue. A man who wears nothing on his hands will enjoy a slim band more than a large statement stone; a man who already wears a big ring can take a bolder design. Then pick a stone for its colour or meaning, and settle the size by measuring a ring he already owns.

1. Does he already wear a ring?

If yes, note the width of the band and the size of the stone. People tend to stay close to what they are used to. If no, start smaller: a Greek key band, a slim signet or a modest oval stone around 10 to 12 mm wide is easier to adopt than a 20 mm cabochon.

2. Pick the stone by meaning or colour

Onyx and black agate: quiet, goes with everything, the safest first ring.
Tiger's eye, amber and carnelian: warm tones for brown and gold wardrobes.
Turquoise and lapis lazuli: strong colour, a classic in Turkish and Central Asian silverwork.

3. Match the design to the man

Calligraphy and Ottoman motifs suit someone who values heritage; dragons, wolves, eagles and skulls suit a bolder taste; Greek key and plain bezels suit a minimalist. When in doubt, choose the design over the stone: he will notice the engraving every day, the stone only when he looks down.

4. Solve the size without asking him

Borrow a ring he wears on the same finger and measure its inside diameter in millimetres against a ruler, or trace the inside circle on paper. Write the millimetre value in the order note and we match the size before the ring is made. Wide bands fit tighter, so for an 8 mm or wider band go half a size up.
