How should a ring fit? Snug, loose, or tight over the knuckle?

Short answer: a ring fits well when it needs a small push to pass the knuckle and then rests at the base of the finger without turning on its own, leaving a mark, or feeling tight by the evening. If it slides off when you shake your hand downwards, it is too loose; if you have to twist and pull to remove it, it is too tight.

The knuckle test

Most fingers are wider at the knuckle than at the base, so the ring has to get past the widest point first. Put the ring on and take it off a few times. A little resistance at the knuckle is normal and is actually what keeps the ring in place. If it passes with no resistance at all, the band will probably spin and may come off while washing your hands.

Wide bands fit tighter than thin ones

A wide band covers more skin and has less room to move, so the same size feels smaller on a wide ring than on a thin one. For bands around 8 mm or wider, most people are more comfortable half a size to one size up from what they wear in a thin ring. Many of our men's rings have a wide, heavy band, so keep this in mind when you compare with a ring you already own.

Fingers change size during the day

Fingers are usually slimmest in the morning and in cold weather, and widest in the evening, in heat, and after salty food or exercise. Measure at the end of the day at room temperature, when the finger is at its normal size, rather than first thing in the morning. A ring that feels perfect at 8 a.m. can feel tight by dinner.

Which hand and which finger

The dominant hand is usually slightly larger, and the same finger on the two hands can differ by a full size. Measure the exact finger you will wear the ring on, not its neighbour on the other hand.

Signs the ring is too tight

  • The skin bulges on either side of the band.
  • You need soap or cold water to remove it.
  • The finger feels numb or looks paler above the ring.

Signs the ring is too loose

  • The stone keeps rotating to the palm side.
  • It falls off when your hands are wet or cold.
  • You can see daylight between the band and the finger at the base.

How to get the right size from us

The sizes on our product pages are Turkish ring sizes, the scale used by jewellers in Turkey. You do not need to convert anything: measure the inner diameter of a ring that already fits, or the finger circumference, in millimetres, and write it in the order note or send it to us on WhatsApp. We match the millimetre value to the right size before the ring is made. The method is explained step by step in our ring size guide. If you are unsure, any jeweller can measure your finger in seconds.
