How do I buy a ring as a gift without knowing the size?

Short answer: the safest route is to borrow a ring they already wear and measure its inner diameter in millimetres. If that is impossible, tell us which finger and roughly what build their hands are, and choose a design that survives being half a size out.

Borrow the ring, measure it, put it back

This takes two minutes. Lay the ring flat, measure straight across the inside opening in millimetres, and note which finger and which hand it is worn on. That last detail matters: most people are a size apart between left and right. Send us the number and we will tell you the size to order.

If you cannot take the ring away, press it into a bar of soap or a piece of modelling clay and measure the ring-shaped impression later.

If you cannot get a ring at all

Then do not guess silently — tell us. Write to us with the finger you have in mind and whatever you can describe about their hands. We make these pieces every day and we can narrow it down with you. We would rather spend a message on it than have a gift arrive in the wrong size.

Choose a design that forgives

Some shapes handle a small error better than others. A narrow band tolerates being slightly loose far better than a wide one, because a wide band grips along its whole width. A heavy stone set high will rotate on a loose ring and sit crooked, so if you are uncertain about the size, a flatter, lighter design is the safer gift. A signet or seal design, worn on the little finger, is also more forgiving than a tight band on the ring finger.

Remember the piece is made for the size

Our rings are made to order on the bench in Istanbul rather than stocked in every size, so the size is set when the piece is made. That is why we ask before, not after. Custom and engraved pieces are also the ones most likely to fall outside the normal return window, so a measurement beforehand protects the gift.

If it still arrives wrong

Write to us. Tell us what you measured and what happened when they tried it on; that tells us whether the issue is the size or the shape of the band. Unused, undamaged pieces can be returned within 14 days of delivery, and made-to-order items with engraving or a special size may fall outside that — so again, the message beforehand is the cheapest step in the whole process.
