Are lab-created stones real stones?

Sapphire stone 925 sterling silver ring — KAMBO

Short answer: yes. A lab-created stone is the same mineral as the natural one, with the same hardness and the same look; it is grown rather than mined. It is not glass and not plastic. What it is not is rare, which is why it costs a fraction of the mined stone. We use both kinds, and we write which one you are getting in the product name.

How to tell which one you are looking at on our site

If the stone is lab-created, the product name says Created — for example “Created Emerald” or “Created Sapphire”. If it does not say Created, the stone is natural. We do not hide it in the small print, because a customer who finds out later feels cheated, and rightly so.

Which of our stones are natural

Agate, onyx, tiger’s eye, turquoise, opal, amber and jade in our workshop are natural stones. These are not rare materials, so there is no reason to grow them. Each one is unique: colour and pattern vary from piece to piece, and the photograph shows one example rather than the exact stone you will receive. You can see them in the agate, onyx, tiger’s eye and turquoise collections.

Which are usually lab-created

Emerald, sapphire, ruby and some amethyst and zircon are the names where mined material in a clean, even colour becomes genuinely expensive. For a silver ring, a lab-created stone of that kind gives you the colour and the hardness at a price that makes sense. Those pieces carry Created in the name.

Does a lab-created stone wear differently?

No. Hardness, scratch resistance and the way it takes a polish follow the mineral, not the origin. A lab-created sapphire is as hard as a mined one. Day to day, the thing that decides how a stone survives is the setting and how you treat it — not where it grew.

Is one “better”?

They are different purchases. A natural stone carries the variation and the history of the material, and no two are alike. A lab-created stone gives an even colour and fewer inclusions for less money. Neither is a trick as long as you are told which you are buying — and that is the part we take seriously.
